This is a statement that usually evokes an immediate agreement or disagreement.
Before we agree or disagree, let us consider some examples.
Moral Conflicts
I would like to illustrate this with a couple of hypothetical scenarios.
Case 1) Homeless person was walking along on hot summer day.
Having walked a few blocks got very tired, took rest near railroad track.
Police arrested him for trespassing, because he was 12 feet away.
Law requires that one should stay 15 feet distance.
Disagreeing with police is not easy to do.
Agreeing with them is even more difficult to do.
“Allow a helpless man to take a rest when he is tired”
Case 2) One of your friend and his family are living in US for a longtime.
They are hard workers and contributing to GDP and to charities.
You came to know the patriarch of the family is an illegal immigrant.
Would you call the INS to deport him?
Not calling INS is not the right thing to do and calling INS is not a loyal thing to do.
“Allow one to work hard for a better life for them, their family and their society”
What are the emotions that are controlling our psyche in these scenarios?
Natural Law
It is the natural law which is a superior law that is working in these situations.
These laws existed before any human laws were created.
It is by this law:
sister helps brother and brother helps sister.
one fights to protect his brother facing possible pain and suffering.
parents feed the children while staying hungry.
one extends a hand to a fallen stranger on the road.
one shares his water with a thirsty old person.
shelters a weary and tiered immigrant running for life.
There is no limit and these scenarios cannot be captured as a finite set.
Such natural laws are not limited to humans, they can be observed in animals as well.
These laws are not written and governed by countries or authorities.
Following legal laws of the land makes you an ideal citizen of a country.
Following natural law will make you an ideal human being.
